It’s also worth separating film from etching, which can look similar but is a different, usually permanent condition. Etching happens when water is unusually soft or when too much detergent is used relative to the soil load, and it shows up as a cloudy haze that doesn’t wipe off because it has physically altered the glass surface rather than sitting on top of it. If the fixes in this guide don’t change anything after a few cycles, etching — or simply glass that has reached the end of its practical life — is worth considering.

Before you try any fix

  • Check your owner’s manual for the manufacturer’s recommended detergent type and any water-hardness guidance specific to your model.

  4. If the manual and cleaner label allow it, run an empty cleaning cycle using the specified program and dose. Do not substitute a universally “hot” setting or combine products; temperature and interior-material guidance vary by model.
  5. If film is on glassware more than the tub itself, switch to a pre-measured tablet or pack formulated for hard water for a few cycles and compare — manufacturer testing has generally found these reduce filming across a range of water hardness levels compared with loose powder or gel.
  6. Reassess after two or three cycles, since a single wash rarely clears buildup that took weeks to form.
A note on cleaning products: don’t combine different dishwasher cleaners, descalers, bleach-based products, or vinegar in the same cycle, and don’t mix them with regular detergent unless the label explicitly says the products are meant to be used together. Follow the label and your appliance manual for what’s approved for your specific model — not every interior finish tolerates every cleaning product.

Maintenance and prevention

  • Keep the rinse-aid reservoir filled if your model uses one; it’s one of the most consistent ways to reduce spotting from hard water.
